Abstract
- It is a known fact that Martial composed many so-called metapoetic epigrams, in which reflections concerning the composition of epigrams encompassed various topics, from the number of lines to the suitability of topics according to readers and to the reading moment. It is expected to find more allusions to Greek epigrammatists, once they were the great poets of the genre before the Latin poet, what happens few times. Being aware of similarities concerning topics in Martial's epigrams and those from the Greek Anthology, above all, J.P. Sullivan, in his monumental book "Martial: the unexpected classic" published in 1991, enlists Martial's epigrams and the respective Greek epigrams, which have topoi used also by the Latin epigrammatist. Making use of such list, the present article aims to identify which topics both Meleager, Greek epigrammatist, and Martial could have used to compose some of their epigrams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
