Abstract

My aim in this paper is to discuss how Zeus' "programmatic" speech in the beginning of the Odyssey (c, 32-43) was seen as a sign of the "new spirit" displayed by the poem and helped to enhance a relative chronology between the Iliad and the Odyssey. I will approach not only aspects of Homeric ethics but also of the literary historiography of Ancient Greece in order to show that the Odyssey does not present a new world view, and that classical philology, by continually focusing on this traditional distinction, prevents us from exploring more fruitful approaches.
