Abstract

In the article, researchers identified a potential association between androstenedione or androstenediol supplementation and Achilles tendinopathy in athletes. Despite the athlete's enthusiasm for these supplements, literature review failed to identify a scientific article that showed any objective benefit derived from their use. Given the known unfavorable changes in lipid profiles and the association between adverse lipid panels and coronary heart disease, further clinical and basic science studies are indicated. In the interim, clinicians should query patients with tendon raptures regarding androstenediol or androstenedione supplementation, in addition to asking about the use of anabolic steroids or fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
