Abstract

The roôle in cutaneous physiology and pathology has long been a subject of intense speculation and great clinical interest. In this brief review, which is focused primarily on murine systems, we outline certain important aspects of the biology of the mast cell, including their ability to produce a variety of cytokines, describe the development of a model system (the "mast cell knock-in mouse") for studying the roles of cutaneous mast cells in biological responses in vivo, and illustrate a few examples of how this approach has been used to investigate the contributions of mast cells and their cytokines to cutaneous inflammatory or immune responses.
