Abstract

The paper presents a critical review of the existing methods of monitoring and comparing road safety situation among countries. Methods are usually based on calculation of fatality rate based on number of fatalities and comparing results among countries. Critical review understands in the first place the differences in the countries’ ranking, based on selection of the type or consequences of road accidents that are used for the calculation of the road casualty risk based on final outcomes. The paper also shows the application of the model for selection of a relevant indicator – road casualty risk based on final outcomes on the territories of chosen European countries. The comparison between obtained research results and the casualty risk mapping on the territories of these countries contributes to the recognition of a need for harmonizing the monitoring and comparing process of the road safety situation, by countries, on the basis of final outcomes.
