This article focuses on the Zika epidemic in Latin America and its countermeasures. It discusses the declaration of the epidemic as a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization, requirements to assess long-term risks to prioritize interventions, factors that determine the scale and speed of the spread of an infection, and the need for efficacy studies for Zika vaccines.
