Abstract

The scant contributions about the population evolution of Tabasco (Mexico) since the conquest years to the end of the seventeenth century, added to the reluctance to accept the figures and results of the studies realized so far, have forced me to analyse in detail this subject. There have been detected some mistakes in the interpretation of the documents used for this analysis, the same ones used here. This is the reason to deserve a reanalysis. Consequently, I will examine the evolution of the different groups of inhabitants, such as indigenas, Spaniards, mestizos, negros and mulatos. The knowledge of the precise numbers of people will make possible a better understanding of the administrative marginality in which these people lived throughout the period studied.
