Abstract

The executive secretary occupation in Brazil is often target to incorrect conceptions on which its duties and roles inside the organizational environment, as well as subjected to a few judgments caused by the stereotype of the occupation and of its feminization built along the years through its growth and highlight in the work force. If we can notice the way this occupation came to be seen, we can then understand the need of a research that can verify what is the real perception of the job, and thus, this research came to be, through the viewpoint of the occupational ghetto, characterized, among other aspects, as a mostly female occupation and with low variation on activities performed. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to analyze the Executive Secretary in private institutions and compare them to the Ghetto Thesis based on the research conducted by Truss (1992). The methodology of this study was qualitative and descriptive, as data collected showed their perception about themselves that were asked through an interview. It was verified, through the semi-structured interviews made with four Executive Secretary professionals that there are still characteristics that bring the executive secretary closer to the occupational ghettos and it was also verified others factors that prevent the total characterization of the profession as a ghetto [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
