Abstract
- The article focuses on two lines of paragraph five of On the Syrian Goddess , a treatise professing to describe the temple and cult at Hierapolis in Syria, which is the best available literary source for the study of religious life in the Roman Near East. Topics discussed include authenticity of Lucian's authorship of the lines; investigation of similarities in syntax, diction and verbs of lines with Lucianic literary work; and foundation myths of the temple at Hierapolis.
