Abstract
- This thesis aims at investigating, through primary sources, the period between 1910 and 1940 in the Brazilian history, analyzing how the Catholic Church was able to relocate itself within the Brazilian social and political scenarios with the Christian Order project. Coming from Rome, this project finds at that time (1910s- 1940s) a favorable setting for its implementation in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro's Archbishop, Sebastião Leme, is the protagonist in the project to re-christianize Brazil, as the Brazilian society saw itself more distant from Christian values after the country became a Republic (1889). This research has its focus in the activities carried out by the Catholic Church and by Archbishop Leme himself to put into practice the Christian Order project, emphasizing three major actions by the Church concerning its relationship with the masses and the State: The Eucharistic Congresses; the nomination of Nossa Senhora de Aparecida (Our Lady of Aparecida) as the Brazilian patroness; and the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) monument. Special attention is given to the hymns composed for the Eucharistic Congresses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
