Abstract

The flow map is the most common tool for representing spatial interactions data. This effective visualization techniques can significantly enhance the knowledge of dominant spatial patterns and can help to draw up intuitively hypothesis for migration modeling. This study introduces the evolution of flow maps from the founders until current practices. We briefly describe the most known opensource software solutions that can be used to display the inter-regional migration flows. Our approach aims to provide a new solution written in R. We present step-by-step instructions of map making, highlighting difficulties and suggesting our solutions. R program language is a powerful tool, it allows map making, data manipulation and spatial modeling in the same framework. Through visualization of Hungarian county level migration we found significantly different patterns by broad age-groups. This finding draws attention to the importance of age and behind it to possible different drivers of migration movements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
