Abstract

Performance degradation in a shape memory alloy (SMA) occurs due to dislocation activities at any stage of its thermo-mechanical deformation history. Knowing the physical energy barriers to activate slip could prove instrumental in devising strategies to engineer superior resistance thereto. Given the multi-elements, the SMA slip propensity is intrinsically decided by inherent bonding landscapes. In essence, the problem of theorizing SMA slipping tendency reduces to a quantum mechanical one. Consequently, atomistic calculations can provide invaluable experimentally verifiable material trend as well as potentially pave the way for advancing novel SMAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
