The article examines the leading theories in criminal law of punishment that demand smooth relationships between their most important inputs and outputs. It discusses several leading punishment theories such as retributivism, consequentialism. It reports how bumpy criminal laws cause divergence from smooth theories. It further discusses rule-standard distinction.
