The use of heavy shunting locomotives is necessary to run shunting operations smoothly. The targets of the analysis of alternative powertrain configurations for shunting locomotives are fuel saving, creation of a flexible usable locomotive and the increase of the reliability of savings by automation processes. Necessary to that end are modular constructed simulation models, to manage the requirements for locomotives. By the use of modern technologies, especially energy storage, an expedient development is essential to minimize the risk and realizing alternative powertrains for shunting locomotives.
