Abstract

The article discusses the history behind the homophile organisations of the U.S. like the Mattachine Society who while striving to remove homophobia from the U.S. were unable to bring in racial diversity in their organisation which was mostly white. Topics include the role of people of color in the homophile movement especially in Washington (D.C.), and the social and political conditions of homosexuals in the U.S. during the 1950s and 1960s.
