Abstract
- Twelve bovine cases were presented with history of anorexia, terminal stage of pregnancy to recent parturition and udder swelling. Clinical examination revealed mild increase in body temperature, decreased ruminal motility, bluish discoloration, coldness and oozing of serum like fluid from affected quarters. The affected quarters showed necrotic sloughing of varying extent. The milk samples revealed presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. All cases were subjected to immediate intensive therapy comprising of fluids, broad spectrum antibiotics, antiinflammatory drugs, analgesics and multivitamins. Follow-up of the cases revealed that seven animals who were severely affected with sloughing of udder tissues, depression and toxemia did not respond to treatment, whereas, five cases that were showing mild signs and presented earlier at the onset exhibited good response to treatment.
