Abstract

Rationality, along with the Enlightenment, became the standard of the development of Western civilization, a paradigm provoking the evolution of modernity. The nineteenth and twentieth century attacked this rationalistic model in philosophy, sociology, the sciences, and the arts to the point that its weakness destroyed its own foundations. Surrealism, which erupted in the art world in the 1920s, was a part of those critics, but not at a rational level but through poetic freedom as an artistic movement that sought to subvert rationality through irrational expression and by defending the ethics of the moment.
