This paper deals with a legacy left behind by National Socialism in the books of Vienna University — library stamps with the Swastika symbol. Recently a library patron used social media to demand that these stamps should be removed. This contemporary response is juxtaposed to an outline of the historical development of the library holdings, the reasons for stamping and the periodization of the stamps used. The stamps and other object details are important historical sources which transform books into historical documents and provide important evidence for NS provenance research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
