This paper deals with a Jordanian figure known in the nineteenth century AD by Sheikh Hussein Alawin, particularly in the literature of the European travelers who visited Petra from Egypt via Aqaba. The study includes two parts; the first part discusses the available information about the Alawin from the accounts of travelers and from recent publications. Interestingly, the name of the Alawin is not common at present and is rarely used or referred to. The second part of this paper presents Sheikh Hussein in terms of his life, lineage, his family, his physical appearance, his character and his income and his role in taking western travelers to Petra according to information derived from the accounts of travelers.
