Compared to a standard spray arc, innovative gas-shielded metal arcs ensure high efficiency gains during welding. That is why Siemens Mobility AG has introduced a cutting-edge spray arc developed by EWM AG, Mündersbach, Germany, at its lo­comotive plant in Munich-Allach, Germany. A reduction of the included angle substantially reduces the number of weld seams required, which consequently results in significant savings in total costs. However, extensive trials and welding procedure tests had to be carried out before the process could be introduced. The technical paper describes the studies on fatigue testing, the classification in the body of standards and the extensive weld­ing tests required for integration in the production process for both companies involved.
