Abstract

The article talks about how the landing ships, medium (LSMs) rescued the survivors of the Mahan class destroyer USS Reid after it was attacked by Japanese bombers along Ormoc Bay, Leyte, Philippines. Topics discussed include the devotion, ingenuity, and heroism of the Reid crew particularly Fireman First Class Arthur Anderson and Electrician's Mate Third Class Alfred Howard Akers Jr., the high maneuverability of LSMs, and the misadventures it encountered when returning to base.
