Circulating microRNA Biomarkers of Diabetic Retinopathy.

The article discusses a study by Zampetaki et al. which is said to be an important advance in the field of microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers with implications in the areas of disease pathogenesis, prognostication, monitoring and therapeutics. It assessed 300 samples from 2 diabetic retinopathy (DR)-related randomized, double-blind, parallel-design and placebo-controlled clinical trials and identified miR27b and miR-320a as being significantly and independently associated with high DR risk.
