Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine, from the confirmed cases in Hispania, the different behaviour and rituals which were developed in connection with the premature death in the Roman World: immaturi et innupti. And how the burial practices concerning prematurely deceased young girls mirror different social structures and religious traditions. The girls studied here, from a wealthy and/or high status Roman social class, with Graeco-Roman traditions, with their uniform grave furnishings, offer a reliable foundation for interpretation: they evoke the "non attained wedding" and female virtutes.
