Abstract
- The article focuses on scientific exploration of Antarctica and what lies underneath the polar ice cap. It comments on the discovery of the Gamburtsev mountain range by the third Soviet Antarctic expedition in 1957 and the discovery of Lake Vostok under 3.7 kilometers of ice near the Soviet Vostok research station. It mentions the discovery of the volcano Mount Casertz in 2004-2005 and efforts to drill into Lake Vostok in February 2012. It reports on the discovery of life under Antarctica's ice.
