Abstract

The state of Oaxaca faces the problem of water supply for human use in communities showing margination due to water scarcity during the dry period, as in San MiguelPiedras municipality in Oaxaca. An alternative is presented here to retain and store rain water. Standard precipitation index classifies the zone as one of normal hydrologic conditions but because of deforestation and lack of soils it is considered as an arid zone. More than 200 water tanks were built with 10000 liters of capacity each. With this type of projects the community itself provides its own water supply, assuming an active participation in decisions and preventing the project from being only an institutional transmission of technical information.
