Abstract

The article explores the history of corruption and anti-corruption in Great Britain. Emphasis is given to topics such as the development of state offices and large-scale imperial warfare, the difference between a gift and a bribe, and instances of bribery as recorded by diarist Samuel Pepys. Other topics include the boundaries between informal social practices and the public sphere, the creation of impeachment trials in Parliament, and the development of anti-corruption in the press.
