Abstract

The relationship between educators and residential staff in a juvenile correctional facility can he an uneasy one when the school and residential providers are independent of each other and responsible to different state agencies. The separate mandates from these agencies to provide treatment and education presents significant potential for inconsistency, and, therefore, disagreement and confusion, in communication, coordination, operations and goals between the respective staffs, and with the youth. This article describes the challenges in the development of an ongoing and successful administrative and practical relationship for the operation of a school between the Justice Resource Institute Inc. and Appalachia Intermediate Unit # 8 at the Cresson Secure Treatment Unit. The unit is a high security facility with 52 beds for adjudicated adolescent males in Cresson, Pennsylvania. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
