Growing Along the Side of the Road.

The article explores the history of African American settlements in the rural areas of Central California. Emphasis is given to topics such as the development of agricultural colonies in the San Joaquin Valley, African American land tenure and family life, and the growth of the communities of Fairmead, Dos Palos, and Cookseyville.
