Abstract

Levy (2008) maintains that the lack of quality in social services security represents an incentive for the informal work. This work shows that the individuals' perception of social security services in Mexico influence their decision of choosing to work in the informal sector. With an econometric probit model, the results indicate that the quality of the service in the institutions of social security, like IMSS and ISSSTF, motivated 38% of workers to work in the informal sector. The investigation supports the supposition that it is not only factors of exclusion, but also of escape, that influence their decisions to choose between a formal employment or informal one in Mexico.
