Abstract
- Given the number of spies who, according to their triumphant captors, have been inflicting immeasurable damage on the United States for the past forty years, it's amazing that the Republic has survived. Of the current batch of espionage suspects none has produced more diverting news coverage than Jonathan Jay Pollard, who achieved a feat previously considered by seasoned observers to be impossible, being arrested on charges of spying for Israel. Hardly had the handcuffs been slapped on his wrists before U.S., newspaper correspondents in Israel were reporting the "shock" and "consternation" of the Israeli government that such a breach of mutual trust should have been wrought.
