Abstract

The article focuses on the risk of extinction facing historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) in the U.S. as public universities in general are losing state fiscal support. Topics covered include how HBCU provide black students with an empowering, safer and more nurturing environment, the drastic and innovative approaches used by HBCU to avoid financial demise, such as turning to emergency fundraisers, and the smaller share HBCU receive from private gifts and grants, and endowments.
