This paper aims to highlight apart of the history of Japanese immigrants in São Paulo -from the reasons for immigration, the arrival and settling, to the development of the colony along with the city by the means of the establishment of institutions and activities in the neighborhood of Liberdade. In this work, we will present the first groups of immigrants that settled in the city and thus we will focus on the history of the Nikkei people. We will also show the branches of activities in which the Japanese people excelled, at that time, and their contribution to the characterization and development of the district. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
