Abstract
- An essay is presented which discusses the politics associated with the U.S. welfare state, mass incarceration in the U.S. (referred to as the carceral state) and social exclusion in the country from the 1960s through the 1990s. An overview of the New York state Governor Nelson Rockefeller's policies on illegal drugs, including their influence on mandatory minimum sentences in the U.S., is provided.
