Based on records found in Great Britain's Slave Compensation Commission, the article explores the history of the slave trade and British colonial slavery by focusing on the Hibberts, a British slave-owning merchant family. George Hibbert was a cotton manufacturer in Manchester, England whose goods were used to trade for slaves in West Africa, while his uncle Thomas was established in Kingston, Jamaica as a slave trader and financier, and his brother Thomas ran a commercial house in London, England.
