Abstract

In the summer of 1951, Australia-based John Bolton and Bruce Slee were working at Dover Heights radio-physics field station, high on a cliff in Sydney, New South Wales' eastern suburbs. They were exploring origins of the enigmatic radio waves reaching Earth from space and to make any progress they needed to pinpoint sources of those signals. For that, they needed a very large dish. With no money to build one they set about making one themselves from cast-off gear and other people's rubbish. Like many others who had worked on secret wartime radar research, Bolton and Slee had become accidental astronomers, putting their knowledge of radio waves to use in the embryonic science of radio astronomy.
