Abstract

The article focuses on refusal of offers for material assistance from Great Britain by the government of Bermuda, saying it is not needed and it is well prepared for annual hurricanes that either hit or threaten the mid-Atlantic island. The Hurricane Fabian, the worst to hit this part of the world this season, killed four people and caused widespread damage on the island of just over 60,000. Three of the four were police officers whose patrol car was washed away by strong winds and huge tides. The fourth was a civilian male whose vehicle was also swept into the turbulent Atlantic Ocean as Fabian raged just yards from the general area where the officers perished. Premier Alex Scott has in the meantime said that tourism dependent Bermuda does not need supplies of blankets, dried foods and other material goods, which were being sent to the island on the HMS Manchester and the Waveknight. As the key tourism sector struggled to cash in on the tail-end of the summer peak season, the island's government has asked civil servants to return to work and to help in bringing life back to normal.
