Abstract

Asthma and bronchial/airway hyperresponsiveness are the commonest chronic medical conditions in athletes, especially in endurance sports. Physical exercise per se, as well as some external factors accompanying sport activity, can promote development of the disease and limit physical performance in athletes. Appropriate functional diagnostics of respiratory system allows to confirm diagnosis of asthma, choose the right medications and monitor the treatment. However, antiasthmatic drugs based mainly on beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonists and glucocorticosteroids could be abused as a doping agents. The appropriate treatment of asthmatic athletes in addition to keeping the disease under control and enabling continuation of the sport career should afford athletes a chance to succeed in competition without being suspected of violation of anti-doping rules.
