Europe's aero engine industry remains excessively fragmented and should be consolidated to boost efficiency and competitiveness, according to Avio executives. Avio is Fiat Avio's new name. Although the Italian engine maker's peers agree on the need to pursue cross-border mergers, no progress has been achieved. The French Snecma group desperately tried to convince Fiat Avio and MTU Aero Engines to create a stronger continental European player in parallel with Rolls-Royce in Great Britain.
