Abstract
- The article discusses the relation of human cognition to printed books. Topics include the three-dimensional nature of pages in a printed book, the two-dimensional nature of digital books, and the linear character of printed books. Also addressed are the image of a book in relation to the book "The Image of the City," by Kevin Lynch, the notion of cognitive chunks in the 1956 paper "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information" by George A. Miller, and the handset book "Phaedrus: A Dialogue by Plato," by Plato, edited by Jack W. Stauffacher, translated by Reginald Hackforth, printed by Jim Faris.
