Abstract

In oral surgery, procedures are often associated with an inflammatory process including pain, edema and trismus. This can be intense and disabling. This process can be controlled by prescription of anti-inflammatory drugs, such as corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are substances that permit to soften functional, esthetic and painful consequences of surgery. However they can present many sideeffects, especially in long term steroid medication, that limit their use. Recent studies have determined the safety and the effectiveness of corticosteroids in short term use in oral surgical procedures, in particular in some clinical situations such as impacted teeth, multiple extraction, vestibuloplasty, osseous surgery, and other dentoalveolar surgery. These studies have also permitted to better understand their mechanism of action, and to propose a rational protocol for their use in oral surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
