Abstract

The article presents facts about the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Topics discussed include the evolution of MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV) from bat coronaviruses, the progression of the syndrome from a febrile respiratory illness to severe pneumonia, and the occurrence of most MERS cases from transmission in hospitals.
