Bogies with independently rotating wheels (IRW) are characterized by the lack of rigid coupling between the left and right wheel. Consequence is the less pronounced ability of handling curved tracks due to lower longitudinal traction forces. Despite the lack of rigid coupling, the IRW Bogies perform a hunting vibration process due to longitudinal traction forces, similar to the classic wheelset. This is leading to an unstable driving behavior above a critical speed. In this paper, a parametric study is presented, which analyzes and quantifies the effects on the critical velocity.
