Abstract
- The article focuses on the discovery of fish and other animals living under 740 meters of ice where the West Antarctic continent meets the sea in January 2015. It reports in 1975, oceanographer John Oliver discovered anemones rooted in ice walls in a crack in the ice of the McMurdo Ice Shelf, 25 kilometers from the shelf's edge, but was unable to collect samples. It comments on speculation that microbes in the under-ice food web feed on carbon-rich debris and sediments.
