Abstract

This study approaches the articulation between religion and politics during the 2012 municipal elections in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. It begins by remarking the movement of candidates running to the city hall towards religious organizations, in search for endorsement that could translate into votes. It then exposes the array of candidates belonging or linked to religious institutions who make up the local religious scene's pluralism, and their attempts to gain a seat in Porto Alegre's Municipal Chamber. The theoretical perspective that undergirds this analysis is centered on an argument for the proximity between what we define as the religious and the political as equal spheres in the constitution of Brazilian civil society.
