Abstract

This article discusses a study which determined whether noninvasive ventilation therapy, as compared with standard oxygen therapy alone, could reduce the rate of endotracheal intubation and improve outcomes in patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. Topics discussed include the conduct of the study in 23 intensive care units (ICUs) in France and Belgium, the enrollment, randomization and follow-up of the study participants, and the primary and secondary outcomes of the study.
