Abstract

The paper deals with notions and diplomatic activity of bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer in establishing relations to Montenegro and their princes as well as signing a concordat between Montenegro and Vatican as a result of that. The paper focuses also on a liturgy background of the time and Strossmayer's aspirations for uniting the occidental and orthodox Church through mutual liturgy language. Since Strossmayer did not succeed in introducing old Slavic language in Civil Croatia because of huge resistance coming from Vienna and Budapest but not from Vatican, Strossmayer saw an opportunity to realize his ideas in the princedom of Montenegro, where he was met by prince Nikola I. Petrović Njegoš in a friendly way establishing a close relationship and finding a real success since the prince saw also his personal and political interests. Thanks to Strossmayer and his friendship with prince, the concordat was concluded and a year later the Bar archdiocese had a privilege to serve the liturgy in vernacular (old-Slavic) language when Strossmayer played a significant role and thus at least partially fulfilled his aspirations which he attempted to realize in the course of his episcopal life.
