Abstract

Examines the conflict that arose between the National Broadcasting Co. Inc. (NBC) and the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) following the airing of the News documentary of NBC entitled "Pensions: The Broken Promise." Complaints filed by the Accuracy in Media against NBC for violating the Fairness Doctrine; Constitutionality of the FCC decision; Report that the FCC ordered NBC to balance what it considered the one-sided presentation of "Pensions" with a broadcast of opposing views; Assessment of the practical application of the Fairness Doctrine; Argument that the FCC's present chairman, Richard E. Wiley, to defend applications of the doctrine on a case-by-case basis.
