Abstract

This study aims at understanding some of the identity issues faced by exmembers of cultic groups. Content and sequence analysis were used in a psychoanalytic theoretical framework to study two interviews, which were conducted with a former member of a Mormon polygamist group. The analysis showed that, although leaving the group has triggered some changes in the participant's identity, these were superficial whereas the most funda mental aspects remained unchanged. Three themes related to the participant's identity are further discussed: a non-integrated introjection of selfrepresentation; differentiation/non-differentiation conflict; and failure in identification.
