Abstract

Focuses on the status of the Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB) of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). Changes which were initiated in the fall of 1987, including the election of Unesco Director General Federico Mayor Zaragoza; Description of MAB, which is an intergovernmental program which emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and which focuses on field research activities; Decision of the International Coordinating Council that a main theme of MAB's programs would be conservation of natural areas and the genetic material they contain; Observation that biosphere reserves constitute a major conservation resource in many areas of the world.
