Abstract

This article studies the ideas about monolingualism and language mixture that appear in Bernardo de Aldrete's work Del origen (1606) and places them in the political, social, and cultural context of the Catalan-speaking lands at the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth century. This contextualization proves, first of all, that an important part of the language ideology in Del origen consists of the defence of linguistic imperialism versus linguistic nationalism. This idea is based on the negativity of language mixture and the support of unbalanced bilingualism, which implies the defence of the exclusive use of the Spanish language in formal contexts in the Catalan-speaking lands. Second, the comparison of Del origen with texts written in both Catalan and Spanish in the Catalan-speaking lands, shows that there are contradictory ideas in Del origen, as far as the value of linguistic mixture is concerned.
